Sweetest Day 2013 is Oct. 19: Sweetest Day history and why you should celebrate

Yes, guys...you messed up again.
If you don't know why your significant other is rolling her eyes today, here's the scoop: It's Sweetest Day. You're probably more familiar with the concept if you have roots in the Midwest, as it hasn't exactly caught on throughout the rest of the nation.

Celebrated on the third Saturday in October, the holiday has sort of morphed into the less-popular sibling of Valentine's Day. But back in 1921, confectioners distributed Sweetest Day candy to "newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor," according to Wikipedia.
In 2011, I made the case for widespread celebration of Sweetest Day. Yep, I still feel that way.
A second Valentine's day would erase the "be all, end all" pressure that comes with the Feb. 14 holiday. It would also allow for a do-over in case your significant other messes up in February.
Good idea, or am I crazy?
